Has anyone driven an Impreza with the 2.5L N/A engine and a manual transmission? Is it fun to drive?

My mom had an 09 and I had an 02. The 2002 Impreza was 100% funnier than the 09 and my 02 was an auto and my moms was a manual. It’s like every thing was dumbed down. It rolled more, was slower had a smaller trunk and worse ride. The manuals are okay not great.

They’re all that I’ve daily-driven for the last decade or so (97, 03, 06, maybe soon 08+). Excellent automobiles, and you can often scavenge free/cheap WRX takeoffs for upgraded parts.

Strut tower rust seems to strike the 02-07 wagons. I just got in from the garage where I was trying to figure out how bad mine is.

Fuel economy is a little hard but don’t be a pussy.

My wife drives an 04 2.5ts with a manual. It is fun to drive. It’s perfectly happy being tossed into curves. The transmission isn’t the greatest, but the car did already have 150,000 miles before I ever drove it so it may not be the greatest example to go by. It does now have a new clutch.

I definitely wish there was more room around the pedals. I have to tilt my foot a bit to get to the gas without catching the brake as well; I do wear a size 14 shoe though so ymmv.

My brother-in-law had one of those 2.5rs 2dr sedans that subie had before the wrxs came out. Liked it except for the interior, (which admittedly left something to be desired...)
